A very nice chapter book
Hello, chuff, chuff.
Hope you enjoy it.
Chuff, chuff, bye!
It was the Little Black Engine’s birthday. The Little Black Engine had a lost seat. He was very sad.
He counted his presents. One was an extra funnel. The other was a new seat. He was really pleased.
And then the guard blew the whistle but the train wouldn’t go. The driver suddenly saw there was no coal so he walked to the engine shed and brought buckets and buckets of coal.
Then the train went chug,
chug, whoooo, whooo, chug, chug, chuff, chuff, chuffa chuff, whoo, whooo.
Then he slowed into the buffers at Mallaig station. All the passengers got off, but to the drivers’ surprise another group of passengers got on, which didn’t usually happen. So he went chug-a-chug, chug, chug, whoo, whoo, chug-a-chug, chug-a chug, whoo, whoo and arrived back at Fort William.
One day Little Black Engine’s driver went and got buckets and buckets of coal from the engine shed. And when he climbed up the ladder to empty his buckets he saw that there was plenty in already, but he put it in anyway.

He went very, very fast along the track because the driver kept putting so much coal into his fire. There was so much steam so you couldn’t see the engine.
The train wouldn’t stop at Mallaig because it had too much coal in its’ engine.
The buffers were pushing back and the train was pushing forward and suddenly Little Black Engine’s driver saw where they were and stopped bailing coal into the fire.
“Phew!” said little Black Engine as he let off steam and stopped.
Little Black Engine had seen where they were but his driver hadn’t. He’d been trying to say to his driver “Stop! Jam on the brakes!” but he couldn’t because the buffers were pushing him.
The guard opened all the
doors and the people were holding onto poles. But as soon as the driver stopped bailing coal into the fire all of the
doors slammed shut. The guard walked
along the train and found that all the doors had slammed shut – every single
door on the train. And then the guard
opened all the doors and the people got out. They tried to catch the boat but the boat had already left because it
had taken too much time when the train was fighting with the buffers.
The end. Bye bye, chuff, chuff.
One day, Little Black Engine’s driver climbed up the ladder to look to see if there was plenty of coal in the coal truck. There was none there!
He fell into the coal truck. Then the guard saw him and moved the ladder in the coal truck, and Little Black Engine’s driver did monkey bars along the ladder until the guard lifted him down onto the platform.
There was no coal in the engine shed nor in the coal delivery centre. The diggers were trying to dig coal up on the beach but they couldn’t find any. Then a digger found one bit of coal, but one bit of coal wouldn’t do for a train, would it? It would only go chuff and then stop.
After a lot of digging the diggers managed to find plenty of coal on the beach and they put it all in the truck and then they went brmm, brmm to the station and dumped the coal in the coal buckets in the engine shed. Little Black Engine’s driver carried them to the engine and then dumped them in and then the coal truck was full.
Little Black Engine felt great and smiling. He would be able to get to Mallaig now.
Then end. Chuff, chuff Bye bye.
